Every day we make decisions.

Some are small, like what to have for breakfast or which task to tackle first. Others have the power to change the direction of our business, career or life.

The truth is, making decisions isn’t always easy.

Some people make decisions quickly and confidently, while others spend so much time weighing up every option that they end up making no decision at all. Sound familiar?

Sometimes we worry about making the wrong choice. Sometimes we wait for the “perfect” answer that never arrives. Before long, we’ve slipped into what is often called analysis paralysis.

Here’s something worth remembering: not making a decision is still a decision.

Over the years, I’ve discovered that the best decisions follow the same pathway I use throughout my coaching and speaking:

Confusion → Clarity → Confidence → Connection.

When we’re confused, everything feels overwhelming. We second-guess ourselves, overthink every possibility and become stuck. But once we gain clarity, something shifts. We begin to see the options more clearly, our confidence grows, and we’re able to connect our decisions with the goals, values and future we want to create.

That’s why I believe better decisions don’t begin with confidence—they begin with clarity.

Before making an important decision, ask yourself:

  • What decision am I really trying to make?
  • Have I gathered enough information?
  • Am I reacting emotionally, or am I looking at the facts?
  • Which option best aligns with my goals and values?

Every one of these questions moves you from confusion towards clarity.

Once you have clarity, confidence naturally follows. Confidence isn’t about knowing you’ll always make the perfect decision. It’s trusting yourself to make the best decision with the information you have today—and knowing you’ll learn if things don’t go exactly as planned.

To help simplify the process, I use six practical steps.

Clarify the issue. Make sure you’re solving the right problem.

Gather the facts. Better information leads to better decisions.

Understand the cause. Look beyond the symptoms to identify what’s really happening.

Explore your options. Give yourself permission to think creatively before choosing a path.

Compare the outcomes. Consider the benefits, risks and long-term impact of each option.

Take action. A decision only creates change when it’s followed by action.

Finally comes connection.

Connection means your decisions align with who you are, what you value and where you want to go. It also means communicating your decisions clearly to others, whether that’s your team, your family, your clients or yourself.

Remember, flexibility is part of effective decision-making. If new information becomes available, don’t be afraid to adjust your course. That’s not failure—that’s growth.

I have a challenge for you.

Think about one decision you’ve been avoiding.

Where are you in the journey?

Are you stuck in confusion? Do you need more clarity? Are you waiting for confidence before taking action?

Instead of waiting, take one small step today.

Gather one more piece of information. Ask one question. Explore one new option.

Remember, clarity creates confidence, confidence creates connection, and connection creates momentum.

One decision at a time, you’ll build a future that reflects the person you’re becoming.
